Hospice of West Alabama (HOWA) continues to grow and strengthen the services it can provide for the community. HOWA offers comprehensive bereavement counseling and support services, which are provided by a master’s level clinical social worker with additional training and certification in grief counseling. Hospice of West Alabama’s bereavement programs are available to provide grief support to the entire West Alabama community free of charge, regardless of whether or not their loved one was cared for by HOWA.
In August 2015, HOWA welcomed Donna Avant, MSW, LCSW, CEAP, as the new bereavement counselor. One of Mrs. Avant’s roles at HOWA is to provide group counseling in the community after a loss. She works closely with school guidance counselors, teachers, clergy, social workers and other professional caregivers.
Bereavement Support Groups
HOWA offers several bereavement support groups which are held each month. Time and location details are available on our Events Calendar.
Individual and Family Grief Counseling
HOWA is proud to be one of the very few hospices in the nation with a full-time grief counselor on staff, who is available for individual and family grief counseling and therapy for children of all ages. For more information or to schedule an appointment call our office at 205-523-0101.
Candlelight Memorial Service
The Candlelight Memorial Service is a non-denominational service held annually to remember those in our community who have passed within the year. Each service features special music, inspirational thoughts and readings, and a special lighting of a candle by those in attendance in memory of someone who has died.
Camp Daybreak is a free one-day bereavement camp, normally held in October, for children ages 6 to 13 who have experienced the loss of someone close to them. Click here for more information.
